After our proposed first Festival for 2020 was cancelled as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic, we finally staged our first ever Yorkshire Motorsport Festival in June 2021.
Thanks to the support of Kirklees Council and Motorsport UK, as well as the generosity of the local community around Holmfirth and Meltham, the Festival went ahead as planned, but with still considerable Covid-related restrictions to ensure the health and safety of both participants and visitors.
The sun shone, occasionally, and the rain came too, but so did thousands of visitors over three days, which included a fantastic series of races on the iconic Wolfstone hill climb circuit where we marked 101 years since cars and drivers tested their mettle on this cracking 0.8 mile route through the stunning West Yorkshire countryside.
Vehicles from across the decades, including vintage Bentleys and Jags, as well as iconic continental marques from the likes of BMW, Mercedes and Ferrari, showed their form on the climb, along with an eclectic range of post war models.
Our thanks here go to the UK Motorsport for licensing the event, and to Mid Derby Motor Club for expertly running the hill climb series over 3 days. It was fantastic to see such a great lineup of cars and drivers of all ages tackle this iconic route.
Away from the hill climb, visitors enjoyed a brilliant three days of Festival fun in the fields, with kids getting sand between their toes on our inland Festival beach and enjoying all the fun of the fair, while mums and dads and the rest of the family had the chance to watch displays and demonstrations, explore our Yorkshire Shopping Village and enjoy artisan food and drink from our various food vendors.
Covid meant that we still had to make some compromises on our programme, including our live music schedule, but for our first Festival, in challenging circumstances, we like to think we pulled off an exciting event which celebrated the very best of British motorsport with a big focus on being as green and as sustainable as possible.
